Dear Listmembers,

Following the letter (April 8th) from the Chinese Medical Society of the Honkong Baptist University, an 'expert committee ' seem to have been set-up to use Chinese medicinal preventative measures to deal with the SARS epidemic in Hongkong ; as well as following also from the post by Emmanuel Segmen to the Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine discussion lists about the sudden increase in the use of herbal treatements in China, I have translated the following article from the on-line issue of the Takung pao

Hongkong University Innovate on Ancient Herbal Prescriptions

To Manufacture Powdered Granules Chong Ji To 'Guard Against'

SARS Epidemic

Takung Pao 2003-4-16 --The death toll from SARS (Atypical pneumonia) is rising. Under this situaion preventative measures assume greater importance. From today, the Honkong Chinese University and Yao Research Centre will make available to Hongkong medical personell poowdered granules to prevent getting SARS. It is expected that on the first day, about 250 frontline medical personell will be able to take the required powdered granules.

Powdered Granules to be delivered to Thousands of Medical Personell

The chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Research Center of Hongkong Chinese Unv ersity Liang Bing Zhong yestered revealed the ancient herbal formulae that they are manufacturing as powdered-granules. There are mainly two ancient formulae--Sang Ju Yin (Morus and Chrysanthemum Combination ) and Y u Bing Feng San ( Jade Screen Formula )(adjusted and manufactured) which will include herbal ingredients that has been clinically proven to be effective in its anti-viral effects. (for example Da Qing Ye ). He predicted that within five days time, they can be distributed to medical personell for their use. The prescribed herbal formula has to be taken continuously for 14 days . Hence, the research center is manufacturing the initial batch of 40,000 packets of these powdered granules ( which can be consumed within 10 days). The comittee is planning to provide for medical personell first and then subsequently they can be made available to the people of Hongkong in general.

In addition, in order to understand the anti-viral effects of the Chinese herbs, the research center is to administer and monitor the results of blood tests to 50 medical personell taking the preparation.

He revealed that on April 22nd, the TCM and Yao Clinical Research Service Center of the Guang Hua Hospital will provide these preventative powdered granules to the hospital outpatients.

On the otherhand, the efforts of the Chinese University TCM Yao Research Center has been supported by the ' TCM Expert Committee for the Prevention and Treatment of SARS' established by the Hongkong Health Administrative Bureau. Unfortunately, the Expert Committee is yet to put forward concrrete measures to prevent and treat SARS.

Expert Committee Still Has No Concrete Preventative and Treatment Measures

In the face of the continuing fatalities due to the SARS epidemic, the Hongkong Health Administrative Bureau has established the ' TCM Expert Committee " . This committee is made up of representatives from the Hongkong Health Ministry, Hongkong Health Administrative Bureau as well as TCM experts from Hongkong University TCM University, TCM and Yao Research Center of the Hongkong Chinese University and the Hongong Baptist University Society. This committee has held two meetings last week.

Mr Liang Bing zhong , a member of the expert committee, revealed yesterday in a press

conference that the conclusion drawn by the committee after discussion is : in the treatment of SARS patients in Hongkong Chinese medicine can play a preventative and complementary role. At present, public hospitals in the city have no mechanism to treatment SARS patients using integrated Western and Chinese medical systems. Chinese medicine practitioners in the city have no experience in treating SARS patients. Hence, within a short period of time, Hongkong TCM practitioners have no chance of participating in the treament of SARS patients.

Affirm TCM Role in the Prvention and Treatment of SARS

He (Liang Bing Zhong) also stated that due to the fact the Hongkong TCM practitioners have no direct clinical experience in the treatment of SARS patients (in hospitals) , hence, if ever Hongkong TCM practitioners eventually participate, it is necesarry first to invite mainland Chinese frontline TCM practitioners to first come to Hongkong and do TCM joint consultations hui zhen .
