Dear Jim, Z'ev and All,

My word in the face of the media blitz is sobriety.

Based on the declining availability of certain herbs in the Chinese marketplace, I'm assuming a lot of people are getting treated for upper and lower respiratory infections in China. Those are the herbs that are suddenly in short supply. So there's a lot of Chinese medicine treatments going on right now for cold-flu type scenarios.

I would guess that a word to the wise would be that a coronavirus-type cold infection is well known in many ways. The best part of them is that they are self-limiting if treated aggressively. It begins as an upper respiratory infection which if treated aggressively self-limits itself and does not become lower respiratory. Lower respiratory infections are hard to treat, and the SARS variety seem lethal. The positive side of virulent viruses is that they quickly destroy their host cells, so quick and appropriate treatment can greatly reduce the progression of the illness.

Appropriate CM treatment at any stage should reduce the severity of such infections. The single most important preventative is always hand-washing. Simple treatment protocols aside from herbal formulas would also include irrigation of the nasal cavity with warm saline solution and gargling. I would view the nasal cavity irrigation morning and night as a preventative with handwashing.

Aren't the overall numbers of infection relatively low considerating historical pandemics and epidemics? Although the infection when it arrives at the lungs appears quite virulent, the media seems to be unnecessarily at code red. lt would be better if sobriety prevailed.

Also I'm noting that Rey has insight and clarity regarding the notion of "positivistic science". America and the UK represent the homeland of all things positivist which if you look carefully is also a tool in our American marketing kit. Ever hear of "standardized herbs"? Ah, scientism at it's best! It seems that the best of CM always tends to fly slightly below the radar any bureaucractic agency whether government, industrial or academic.

Warm disease theory would seem to be the ticket in the present scenario. >>>Z'ev:It will be interesting to see how SARS situation develops and is resolved---if it is. There should be someone in China with CM experience who has already diagnosed and treated some of these patients. With all the people on this list someone should have contact with the hospitals there; shouldn't we hear something soon? It's situations like this where the rubber hits the road.Jim Ramholz
