Regarding TCM treatment of SARS in China, the following is excerpted from a

personal communication from Beijing:

<<Since there is no known cure for the new

disease [sARS], famous TCM doctors in Beijing have suggested the

following formula for the prevention of the disease. And now many

people in China are taking this medicine.

cang shu 12g huo xiang 12g yin hua 20g guan zhong 12g

huang qi 15g shan shen 15g fang feng 10g bai shu 15g

7 bags for 7 days; cook one bag of herbs for two servings, one in

the morning before breakfast and one after dinner (30 minutes

apart). Good for at least one month.

Another way is to smoke the room with moxa. It is

very helpful to kill the virus and help prevent the disease.>>

Frances:

This formula is interesting considering it contains herbs to deal

with dampness in a Earth/Ram year. It looks like a very abreviated

version of Tuo Li Xiao Du Yin (it can also be found in the Qualiherb

catalog), a popular formula in Taiwan according to Andy Ellis. We've

used it for years as a base for a general formula for immunity

support. While the formula wouldn't be effective for someone who

already has SARS or another respiratory condition, it could be used

before the flu season for immune system support.

In the 11th and 12 centuries, formulas were prescribed according to

the seasonal influences and the 5-Phases. Maybe this idea has come

around again.
