Guest guest
April 28,2003 Dear Zev, Alon, Cara,Ken, Jim, I think that it will be helpful to see both (lei) xing (typologies, classification) and (bian )zheng ( hou clinical patterns as per Volker's translation ) as tools that we deploy in working the clinical profile of a contingent individual patient and on this basis tailoring the individualized treatment formula lun zhi. As Cheng You Ren a veteran TCM practitioner in Shanxi province in North China in his commentary on the bian zheng lun zhi features of the of Shang Han Lun and how it differentiates from contemporary medicine (biomedicine) stated in l983 that In TCM using the method of bian zheng lun zhi means the practitoner treats the patient and not the disease. " It's (TCM) main spirit takes the patient as its partner' dui xiang and not the disease ji bing as its partner. It puts little stress upon the disease but rather puts the main stress upon the patient. It does not treat yi zhi the disease but rather treats the patient bing ren. " (Cheng You Ren (l983) Elucidation and Annotation of the Shang Han Lun Shang Han Chan Shi , Shanxi , Shanxi Science and Technology Publishing House, p.20) I agree with Todds' contention that what is important is what works clinically. The problem facing TCM in China and in the West in contemporary times is how to evaluate ping ( or determine the values to deploy to evaluate ) the results or outcome of this pattern differentiation and individualized treatment. Historically, previous methods of evaluating clinical outcomes has always been focused upon the 'disease' rather than the 'patient ' . We are now witness to this phenomena in the unfolding SARS epidemic. Regards, Rey Tiquia I think you posted a good question here re: Zheng and Xing. I think that before we can settle the issue of whether to xing or 'type cast' patients or zheng them ie. diagnose their pattern , it will be useful to first work out the meaning of these words. The word zheng is very ancient. By itself, the TCM dictionary defines it as " disease condition within the body which is discovered outside. As in the verification of the existence of things " ti nei bing zhuang zhi fa xian hu wai. ru shi wu zhi you dui zheng ye. With the advent of the putong hua modern mandarin, to this word was added another word hou
