Guest guest
I'm surprised that there isn't much talk of differential diagnosis in this discussion on postpartum. Isn't that the hallmark of our medicine? The classical liturature has references to the dangers of dispersing postpartum because deficiency is one of the charactaristics of the postpartum period. On the other hand there are references to the dangers of tonification postpartum because another charactaristic of this period is stasis of blood. The key to this conundrum of paradox is differential diagnosis. Besides stasis and deficiency, there is what ever else is going on with the patient as well - cold, heat, damp....If any one is interested in an in depth discussion of treating women herbally in the postpartum period, please contact me off line. I have translated a great chapter from my teacher Qiu Xiao-mei's book. My computer and back up hard drive were just destroyed in a fire and so I only have a hard copy. She describes special diagnostic methods for this period as well. Sheng Hua Tang is well balanced in tonification and dispersion but I wouldn't recommend just giving it without careful investigation. As for postpartum weight loss. I give my patients at least a year to discover the equilibrium her body comes to naturally after the birth and nursing period. After that I use the same guidelines for increasing balance and well being as ever. Sharon Sent using the Entourage X Test Drive.
