Guest guest
Dear Colleagues, I would appreciate advice on the options - search portals, specialist engines, databases, etc. - that you/your colleagues use to source DIGITAL articles of high scientific quality. My main search options for articles/abstracts on the science databases are: (a) Integrated online OVID/SilverPlatter interface to CAB Abstracts, Biosis and Medline [at web5.silverplatter.com/webspirs/start.ws ]; (b) Scirus (occasionally) at: www.scirus.com/search_simple_boolean/ © I know of, but do not use, the ISI Web of Science For general WWW searches, I use: (a) Google Advanced Engine [www.google.com/advanced_search] - my favourite (b) If Google does not succeed [and that is rare], I try special search software by Copernic or WebFerret [downloadable free from the WWW] - find them on Google PS: Have any of you tried to source online technical material written in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Russian? If yes, I would appreciate your comments on what you regard as the the best commercial software for high-quality translations from those languages into English. PPS. In cooperation with Systran, Altavista has an online translator called Babelfish [ http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr ]. This is a FREE service, but can handle only short blocks of text and can give only a crude translation to or from the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish. Babelfish can also handle 4 Asian languages - Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian - but with worse accuracy than it can handle European languages. When using Babelfish to translate Webpages, it is best to use two separate Browser Windows, one to locate the pages of interest [say via Google] and the other to run Babellfish.
