One of the functions of qi is to warm. Qi is what circulates the blood. It is the qi in the blood circulation which warms, and lack of blood will necessitate a lack of qi circulation where the blood normally flows. Less blood, less qi, less warmth. Of course this can lead to stasis or stagnation, which can cause depressive heat, but that's another story. Yang xu will lead to a lack of blood circulation, since it is yang that moves the fluids, qi being a type of yang, and yang being a type of qi. So you could end up with either pathomechanism producing the same results. If the patient is blood xu and cold, I would nourish blood and supplement yang. Joseph Garner, L.Ac.
