Has anyone read this as an explanation anywhere? the patient is convinced that the sore throat is directly related to stress and anxiety, but it is only of 2 weeks duration, there were never any exterior symptoms, it arose suddenly concomitant with severe insomnia. So it appears to be internal, hot and excess. The branch does conform to a stomach heat pattern, but that doesn't explain the stress factor. It could be liver but there were not enough liver signs in my estimation. No wiry pulse, easy anger, hypochondriac pain, etc. Chinese Herbs " Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds " -- Albert Einstein

No wiry pulse, easy anger, hypochondriac pain, etc. Aside from the fact that I personally believe emotions can manifest any symptom you can think of, if you look in Bensky/Gamble’s MM on pg 196, you will find that Mu Tong in combination with Dan Zhu Ye and Sheng Di Huang are recommended for manifestations of Excess Heart Fire, which are described in this entry to include ulcerations of the oral cavity, burning pain in the throat, irritability, and insomnia. Is it possible that what your patient is calling a sore throat is actually either or both of the oral ulcerations or burning pain in the throat? It may not be what is typically referred to as a “sore throat” but may feel similar enough as to be easily confused. Also, two weeks of a wind cold/heat induced sore throat would be quite a long time in my book. I believe that the oral symptoms of heart fire mentioned above may be intentionally called something other than a “sore throat” in order to differentiate these two patterns for diagnostic purposes even though they may feel quite similar to the owner of the throat in question. Guest guest
The book 'A Manual Of Acupuncture' on pages 211,212 give this information: - The hearts divergent channel Ascends along the throat and emerges at the face. - In regard to the HT channel uses: Treating disorders of the throat such as pain, swelling and congestion. - for example HT5 is indicated for Throat painful obstruction. Hope it helped, Dan Levin , " Stephen Morrissey " <stephen@b...> wrote: > > > [@i...] > > > what about heart fire generating stomach fire via the generation cycle > of the five phases? then stomach fire is listed as a pattern that leads > to sore throat from internal causes in sionneau. thus if an emotional > stress agitated the heart and thence the stomach (which was already > primed to explode due to an excessively spicy diet), could the heat rise > up the ST channel to the throat?
