Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

I regularly get asked for advice regarding career choices. These are the hardest questions to ask and the hardest questions to answer. Perhaps any of the wiser members of our list could add a comment. The one asking the question shall remain anonymous but is currently a practicing LAc. I'm copying to my 21 year old son whom I try to advise only by quoting his grandfather and grandmother.

Dear Anon,

My pleasure to listen and care. I like you. I also can empathize with precisely your issue of commitment and direction. Most people are facing this between 28 and 35 years of age. Is that where you are? No need to answer ... I'm not asking out of curiosity.

I would always advise you to be the scholar. Add studying and, if possible, credentials to your resume. Do it for you, not for your clients. You are the Client of Life (or the Beloved of God as the Persian poets say.) If you can help yourself to be balanced, energetic, pain-free, have a slim-flexible body habitus, self-discipline, then you can offer the same to your clients. We have only to give what we are. We can ultimately only teach (and "treat") by example.

If my advice seems too hard, it's because I'm pushing 55 years of age and learned all of this the slow, gradual and hard way. So now I'm just your average American who loves all that Americans love, but I can also feel really good because I run 8 miles per day on average and eat completely whole, unprocessed foods. I also pay close attention to the teachings of CM and physiology. Pain is stasis in every science I've studied. So if you don't move and stretch in a balanced and synchronous manner, you'll have some pain ... a little or a lot.

In the final analysis, you'll be become the professional that you have practiced to become. My father's truest piece of advice was this: "What ever you are doing is what you are becoming. Do you want to be what you are now doing?" Only you can ask this question of yourself. Only you can answer it.

Dear Emmanuel,

I am far from being a scholar, but as I will be celebrating my 51st

birthday next week I would like to share with you a conclusion I have

come to from my diverse life experiences. I believe that within each of

us is an inate wisdom which knows which direction we need to take. MY

tradition, which is orthodox Judaism , tells us that " the path one

chooses to take , it is there that a person is directed. " I believe that

we are constantly being given direction, but it is up to us to listen to

the small voice speaking to us,and pay attention to the subtle messages

we are constantly receiving. Our society, and specifically the multi

media are bombarding us with information, most of which is just

distracting noise. Take a few precious moments each day to escape that

which contols you and reflect on the seemingly serendipitous events that

have occured. Reflect on the interesting coincidences you have

experienced. Most of all have an open and objective mind to allow your

inner wisdom to connect with you.

Much success in your search.

Sincerely,

Yehuda Frischman

Thank you, Yehuda, for adding your advice to mine. Taking a moment for daily meditation is a wonderful suggestion that I heartily endorse. It does have powerful and cumulative effects. I'll pass it along to our colleague, Anon. The "search" as you say belongs to her. It occurred to me that Marne Ergil, Ta-Ya Lee, Cara Frank and other women colleagues on list might have advice as well for this younger woman. Ahem ... not that any of you are any where near my advanced age. ;-)
