Guest guest
Dear CHA, Does anyone out there know if it is possible to have an herb tea or herb powder analyzed to determine what the ingredients are. The amounts of the ingredients are not important If possible, where can this be done? Thanks in advance. Greg Livingston Lake Street Greg A. Livingston, L.Ac. Guest guest
Greg, There are others who can answer you more explicitly, but I have been around folks who have been doing operations like the one you ask about for many years now, and one of the curious aspects of such activity is the question of the unknown. Specifically, how does one look for something that one doesn't know exists? I knew one of the guys at UCLA who discovered endorphin, and his story about how that evolution took place impressed upon me something that my friend Richard Hammerschlag told me about wet science. It happens in glimpses. The answer to your question is definitely yes, but then again you can really only look for something that you know about...unless you know how to look for the unknown...and can afford to spend your time doing so. Guest guest
Hi greg, You might want to contact Richard Ko, PhD, of the department of health services Food and Drug branch. He published a couple of years ago a wonderful compendium of Asian patent medicines, including a lab analysis of each patent's content in ppb of lead, arsenic, mercury and other chemicals. You can reach him at rko. good luck, Yehuda ______________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Surf the web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER! Guest guest
Hi Greg, No one makes that determination without having a clue as to what should or should not be in the powder. If you were looking for the relative content of some known herb, you would run an HPLC and look for levels of the marker or markers for that herb. Like Dang Gui has to relevant markers that everyone looks for. You need a pretty sophisticated lab. Just looking at a fingerprint doesn't tell you which herbs are in the formula. You have to run it against standards. Please fill us in as to why you would want to do such a thing? Or respond off list if that's easier. Guest guest
Hi Ken, You've written a more eloquent answer as usual to my own which is just the point-and-grunt scientific version. Thank you for your ephemeral insights. ;-) Emmanuel Segmen - kenrose2008 Monday, July 28, 2003 3:06 AM Re: Herb Formula Analysis Greg,There are others who can answer youmore explicitly, but I have been aroundfolks who have been doing operations likethe one you ask about for many yearsnow, and one of the curious aspects ofsuch activity is the question of the unknown.Specifically, how does one look for somethingthat one doesn't know exists?I knew one of the guys at UCLA who discoveredendorphin, and his story about how thatevolution took place impressed upon mesomething that my friend Richard Hammerschlagtold me about wet science. Guest guest
Ken, Yehuda, and Emmanuel, Thank you all for your responses to my inquiry. I won't go into it here as to why I was asking as it would probably bore you, but I do appreciate you all sharing your time and knowledge. Again, thanks. Sincerely, Greg Lake Street Greg A.
