Microsoft Windows operating systems are poorly designed and set up to encourage these opportunistic infections. Many owners of computers running Windows do not maintain proper defensive measures, ie implementing a fire-wall and up to date anti-virus software. In about ten years of running Macs, I have not had one virus infection that was able in any way disable my system. The farming of our names from is a real nuisance. I wish Todd would seek out an alternative, even if we have to pay a small amount to avoid the ads, the spam, and the email assaults. There is conference software out there that could wall us off from these blights. It would certainly be worth ~$20 a year to me. I did a scan and had no infection on either of my machines. Jim Ramholz

I keep my Norton up to date and have Firewalls... and I did get the W32blaster.worm. Basically the worm is written to boot you off the internet every so many minutes, and then over time will work its way into files. My computer was vulnerable because I neglected to down load necessary Microsoft Window " Patches " . My computer is till under warranty and took it to Gateway, and their customer service is horrific. They wanted to wipe of my hard drive... said it was the only way, and charge me 99.00 plus dollars. I said forget it, and called a computer guy with my referral network... he came to the house removed the worm, downloaded the " Patches " and I am happy to say that he only charged me 55.00 and gave me lots of valuable information! I have been operating computers for years and this is my first time at getting a computer virus. *ooooch* Teresa

I've never got infected and got out of the habit of downloading the MS patches when I had a Sony Viao. But I can sympathize with you for having a Gateway. I bought one years ago and it was nothing but trouble--even though another friend bought several for his business and never had any problems with them. Guest guest
Yes, I have! Thats all I worked on, when I was a Lab Tech @ San Diego State... nevah had a problem. I want my next computer to be a Mac lap top. I clearly was not thinking, the day I purchased a Gateway! Never ever, again. I have had Macs since the beginning--and no viruses and great time on every computer!
