Guest guest
" Emergency Gardening, " an article in the 8/9/03 issue of Science News, discusses ways to culture plants from totipotent plant cells. The article primarily describes ways to build up the stock of endangered plant species, but also mentions specifically goldenseal, a North American medicinal plant which is endangered in the wild. Numerous sampled bottles of herbal preparations of this plant were found to have dangerous levels of lead concentrated by the root of the plant. This new way of culturing plants was suggested as a way to avoid this accumulation of lead and other toxic elements, as well as to replenish plant stock. The purported medicinal ingredients were shown to be unaffected by this method of propagation.
