Fu xiao mai vs xioa mai: I was just reading Bob's Psychiatry

book, and he stated that Fu xioa mai was better for astringing,

but to calm the spirit Xiao mai should be used. I see that

Mintong lists this as Xiao Mao (Huai). Any comments on this? I

do not remember a distinction being taught in school.

Gabrielle, I was also taught that huai xiao mai is best for calming spirit.

My teacher would laugh at us when we tried to put fu xiao mai in a formula

like gan mai da zao tang.

She said the difference is that fu xiao mai would float in water, whereas

huai xiao mai would sink, thereby nourishing and calming the shen better.

Does this ring true with the Chinese texts, Bob?

Heather,

This distinction between Fu Xiao Mai and Huai Xiao Mai (or simple

Xiao Mai) is not esoteric. It is a standard rap taught in Chinese med

schools and seen in clinics all over.

BTW, Fu Xiao Mai floats in water because it is the husks of wheat that

has been eaten by bugs. Therefore, it is sometimes called " Blighted

Wheat " in English.
