heavy herbs and liver qi

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had guidelines for working with heavy sedating

medicinals when there is also liver qi stasis. I was told or read at some point

that heavy sedaters tend to promote stagnation (which makes perfect sense to me)

and that being the case:

1) How long is it OK to leave someone on these?

2) Does one want to taper off dosage to avoid a rebound effect? (I'm assuming

that if you just press down without nourishing yin, clearing fire, etc., the

effect would be temporary, if the nourishing has not taken hold a relapse would

be likely, and if heat was due to stagnation to begin with it could be worse).

3) Are there indications one could look for to show that the spirit is settled?

(indicating properly nourished and not ready to fly off the handle again,

outside of pulse, I guess).

Thanks,
