Dear Emmanuel and All,

I would like to update everyone about the results of a symposium I attended

last night at the Sunderland Theatre at the Faculty of medicine of the

University of Melbourne . The speaker was the Australian CMO ( Commonwealth

medical Officer) Prof. Richard Smallwood ( a gastroentorologist by medical

specialty) who spoke about the " Protecting Australia From Communicalble

Diseases " which included SARS.. He spoke about the prospect of more

epidemics and pandemics here in Australia including influenza, malaria, BSE

CJK mad cow disease), tuberculosis, HIV AIDS,SARS etc. He specifically

mentioned the problems of enhanced infections resulting from overuse of

antibiotics. On the question of SARS, he said that thanks to the stringent

infection control measures here in Australia , and luck, we only had one

confirmed case of SARS.

After his one hour talk, the moderator said that the speaker will

entertain two questions from the audience. I raised my hand as well as

another person at the front of the hall who asked about what the CMO is

doing about the issue of 'bioterrorism'.

I prefaced my querry with the work that I did following the SARS

epidemic through on-line Chinese language newspapers and on-line fora.

from February till August of this year. I told Proff. Smallwook, I was moved

by the efforts of the local people in southern Guangdong and Honkong in

struggling against the epidemic especially in the face of the uselessness of

the use of Ribavirin and steriods. I spedifically cited the case of the

first cases of SARS patients who were sucessfully treated by a hospital in

Guangzhou city where none of the health practitioners suffered from any

opportunistic infection. This news never landed in any media outlet here in

Australia . The Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine scooped the news !

Then I querried Prof Smallwood: considering the prospect of more

pandemics, what is the Australian health authorities doing in terms of

tapping alternative health care traditions we have here in Australian

including traditional Chinese medicine in dealing them ?

Prof Smallwood replied: " We are all aware of the Pan Pharmaceutical

debacle " (laugh from the audience). Then he said " as for other tools for

dealing with epidemics, we are open to it. Just provide us with the evidence

of how they work. " I raised my hand to do a follow-up question but the

moderator declined.

Regards,

Rey Tiquia

Thanks, Rey.

I figured you were the very guy to go to on this. I'm excited to hear of all

your work. Congratulations! I know you're still in the midst of your work,

but I feel like cheering as you sprint your way along the trails ... even

blazing trails as you go. I look forward to savoring the words of your

writing.

In gratitude,

Emmanuel Segmen
