The accuracy of rigorous research

Dear Folks,

I just wrote an email about HRT that mysteriously vanished. So, having

provided more detail before, I'm going to keep this one brief, and

mention that I think the genuinely scientific knowledge about HRT has

been pretty accurate all along. The iatrogenic potential was known

about, and scientists were able to be fairly clear what the limits of

their knowledge was as well, for example in terms of potential

benefits, that hadn't been properly established.

What I think the HRT phenomenon has been about, besides commercial

considerations, was that it was a medical fad, a well known phenomenon

discussed by Andrew Weil quite well.

I would suggest that when scientific research is conducted rigorously,

it is rarely misleading - one can be quite clear about what the

research establishes, and what it doesn't. Much of the time, the

problem is that people fill in the uncertainties with fantasy -

optimistic fantasies, possibly, if it's a biomedical treatment, and

pessimistic fantasies if it's a CAM therapy.
