While not as backwards sounding as primitive, Needhams' point was that he felt the knowledge base of chinese medicine was only partially developed. In fact, his entire thesis is that Chinese science made great leaps, then stagnated. It is cultural reasons to which he attributes this stagnation, largely the dominace of confucianism and ancestor worship. I take no side here. Just doing the reporting. I knew a CM practitioner (who learned CM in Chinese) who claimed he didn't know what that word meant at all, and instead talked of " unity " .
