Hi Doug,

ASHP is a pain to work with. Depending on the plan, you have to file

reports after every few treatments and you get a total payment of $50

per treatment and constantly have to ask for more treatments. It's a

real hassle, but then sometimes the main carrier that contracts with

ASHP will send a check for the whole amount you bill for (no network

discount taken)... So sometimes it's ok. I don't think I'll take them

in the future, and know quite a few other acupuncturists who won't

either.

Re: Malpractice carriers

After I went to China I had a lapse in coverage with them. They refused

to re-insure

me even though I've never had claims etc... Seemed odd, acupuncture

insurance has

to be money in the bank for them. Oh wellllll.....

On a seperate issue, I'm debating about ASHP in California. My

colleagues seem

equally divided on whether to do it or not. If any one has an opinion

and wants to

comment publically or privately let me know...

$40 plus a $10 copay, depending on the coverage.

Oh really?! I have been only receiving a $30.00 re-imbursement, plus

patient has to pay $10.00 co-pay. My experience has also been that ASHP

will not re-imburse for internal medicine, only their defined list of muscle

skeletal ailments.

The pay scale is unique to the insurance program that contracts with

ASHP. There are a few different pay scales. Also different states have

different pay scales...

As always with these sort of guys, they will pay you as little as you are

willing to take, and then ask you to take less. That people still deal with them

is a tribute to PT Barnum.

So I guess your opinion is not to use ASHP? Is that what you are saying?

Julie adds:

I refuse to participate in ASHP, because I think their reimbursement rates

are insulting. When Cigna will now pay $95 for acupuncture and $110 for

acupuncture with electrostim, I won't work for $40 or even $50. My work is

labor intensive, I see one patient at a time, and I need to earn a living!

I personally do not. They have been supportive of the profession in the past,

though, and it may be a good place to start for a new practitioner in a

crowded marketplace until they get name recognition and the patients that can

actually pay us what we are worth.

To some people, $40 is better than nothing, and to some people, they would

rather have the free time. Unfortunately, the patient loses because many

practitioners will not participate due to the low payment of fees. Inititally,

they

talked a lot about professional training programs for their providers that

would be free. I wonder if they do this now?
