Mahuang and KI/Adrenal effect?

My notes on Mahuang (from multiple WWW sources) are below.

 

It is said to enter LU & BL. Under ACTIONS (3), it says: Expel

Water; Diuretic~Antioedema (pseudoephedrine in raw Mahuang);

Antienuresis; Reduce Swelling (General);

 

Surely this indicates a KI (and possibly adrenal) effect?

Herb: Mahuang [bANNED??]; Hb Ephedrae

 

Main Class: Release Surface~Acrid/Spicy~Warm; Make Sweat;

Expel Wind+Expel Cold

 

Nature: Acrid; Bitter~mildly; Warm

 

Channels: LU; BL

 

Dose: As Soup: 2-10g; crude Hb to Make Sweat*; Expel EPFs;

Prep Hb, w other Hbs is Make Sweat~mild; Calm effect, after baked

& is used for cough & asthma; Ephedrine tablet: 25-30mg tid;

Pseudo Ephedrine tablet: 30mg tid

 

Main Actions: (1) Antifever; Make Sweat; Release Surface (Expel

EPFs, esp Expel Cold, Ease chills; Expel Wind); Antivirus, esp flu

virus; (2) Build LU Qi; Move LU Qi (Clear LU; Diffuse LU;

esp in bronchospasm (weaker but more sustained than epinephrine);

Ease Cough, esp pediatric; Calm Asthma; Antidyspnoea;

Antiwheeze; Clear Phlegm; Stimulate respiration; (3) Expel Water;

Diuretic~Antioedema (pseudoephedrine in raw Mahuang);

Antienuresis; Reduce Swelling (General); (4) Warm Cold Bi;

Antiarthralgic; (5) Antiallergy~skin; Antiallergy/Antihistamine; (6)

Open Nose/Sinuses; Ease pressure in sinusitis;

Haemostat~epistaxis; Erupt Papules; Ease Itch; (7) Build Xue;

Quicken Xue; Build HT; Boost HT muscle contractility; Boost HT

output; Move HT Xue; Quicken Xue in brain & muscle; Vasodilator

but Vasoconstrictor~Peripheral; Hypertensor (HT & vascular effects

like epinephrine but persist 7-10 times longer); CNS Tonic/stimulant;

cerebral stimulant; Antifatigue/Antiexhaustion; Boost

Stamina/Physical Strength; Boost Performance/endurance;

Stimulant~Boost Energy/Warm Body; Boost body fat loss; (8) Also:

Ease Spasm; Spasmolytic; Antidiarrhoea~pediatric; Antibacterial;

Antimicrobial; Antiinflammation; Anticoagulant/Antithrombus; Topical

as Mydriatic in eye

 

Main uses: LU DysFx; asthma, wheeze*; Flu/respiratory

infection~early stage; fever w chills; asthma w wheeze,

cough~pediatric & asthma~pediatric; cough~whooping, Common

Cold, cough, hayfever, hypotension, circulatory insufficiency,

urticaria, enuresis, narcolepsy, myasthenia gravis, allergies;

Narcolepsy; Warm liquid of Hb tea to Release Surface in Wind Cold

w chill & anhydrosis (sweat~absent) w floating & large pulse; cool

Hb tea in Fluid Retention/oliguria; oedema; enuresis; epistaxis;

diarrhoea~pediatric; HT Xu w low HT output

 

Combinations: (1) Mahuang w Guizhi to Boost Make Sweat effect in

Wind/Cold/Wind Cold w Superficial Shi w common Cold, chilliness,

fever~moderate wo sweat, headache & general soreness,

Nose~Obstruction wo sweat, pulse~floating & tight; (2) Mahuang w

Xingren & Gancao in Wind Cold Surface Attack & LU Qi

Stasis/Obstruction w cough & dyspnoea; Mahuang w Ganjiang,

Xixin, Wuweizi, Guizhi, etc to Warm LU & Resolve Fluid Stasis in

LU Cold w cough & dyspnoea, sputum~watery & profuse; Mahuang

w Shigao in LU Heat w cough; Mahuang w almond in asthma; (3)

Mahuang w Baizhu in Shi Pattern & other Surface Patterns like

Surface Wind Cold/oedema w oedema of Fluid Retention, esp in

upper half of body; (4) Mahuang w other Warm Hbs to Expel Cold in

Cold Bi w arthralgia, Cold abscess, etc; Mahuang w cinnamon in

Wind Cold; (5) Mahuang w Bohe & Chantui in eczema/skin allergy;

(6) Wind Cold w Nose/Sinuses blocked, nose~congestion,

rhinitis~allergic; urticaria, itch, measles/papules w eruption

incomplete;

 

Warnings: Keep away from children; CI in persons <18 years old;

Avoid prolonged use; Reduce/withdraw Hb if side effects occur

(nervousness, tremor, insomnia, appetite~loss, nausea; CI:

Pregnancy/lactation, hypertension, HT disease, thyroid disease,

diabetes, dysuria w prostate enlarged; avoid if on MAOI/other

prescription drugs; limit intake of total alkaloids to 120mg/d in 4

equal doses of 30mg; L-ephedrine causes less arrhythmia than

epinephrine but can cause arrhythmia in HT disease~physical/if

patient is on digitalis; CI: hypertension, diabetes & thyroid disease;

may cause hyperglycemia, sympathetic activity & release

catecholamines; may cause hypertension, insomnia, arrhythmia,

nervousness, tremor, headache, seizure, CVA, AMI, KI/BL~uroliths;

Avoid if no experience & diagnostic skill, esp in pulse reading. In

TCM, Mahuang is known as “army general”. powerful & can be

dangerous if used incorrectly. CI: diet formulae & as recreational

drug. TOXIC reactions include headache, restless, imsomia,

HT~palpitation, tightness in chest area, lacrimation & rhinorrhoea,

uncomfortable, fever, sweat nonstop, abdomen~upper discomfort,

mouth dry, nausea, emesis, tinnitus, pyrexia & hypertension; raised

HT rate. Large dose can suppress HT & slow HT; Use Emetic to

Antidote oral excess; use Laxative; Reduce absorption. If there is

serious nervous reaction/spasm, use chloral hydrate CCl (3) CH

(OH)2 & maybe Oxygen

 

Comments: Ephedrae sinensis Hb (Caomahuang), Ephedrae

equisetinae Hb (Muzeimahuang), Ephedrae intermediae Hb

(Zhongmahuang) are three different types of Mahuang
