In ayurveda, coffee is good for kapha, bad for pitta and vata. In a nutshell, I think Kaphas are damp-cold, spleen xu and yang xu; pittas are often dampheat, liver depression fire and vatas are liver depression, yin/blood xu and internal wind. Black coffee can relieve kapha all by itself. for vata, it must be weak and mixed with milk and sugar, then it relieves depression, but the milk and sugar prevent wind from arising. Pittas often enjoy coffee, though it is bad for them. They like the yang excess and heat and crave more of it. While vatas are often perceived as anxious and timid and kaphas as sedentary and dull, pittas are rewarded for their pathology in our scoiety, so they don't see their defect.
