Guest guest
The bioessence company distributes min tong powder extract herbs. In their catalog, they explicitly promote the process of prescribing by creating formulas form all single herbs (and they are a Taiwanese company, Alon). They say all their single herbs are 5:1 extracts, not different like 12:1 for some or 2:1 for other herbs. So this oft-heard criticism is moot when using min tong, at least. While I agree with Jason that raw herbs are a bit more reliable than extracts, the difference is negligible if dosage is actually equivalent. I think Steve's description of the current use of these products in China would confirm this as well. While some of us might get by using raw herbs (half my patients take them, for example), I do not think they are a viable form for middle america. People take them when I prescribe them because they seek me out for this purpose. But when I had just started out, it ws pretty hard to make this case and it will get harder as time goes on. I can envision an ironic situation where all of China is using extracts and a few holdouts in the US are still insisting raw is the only way to go. I believe there is technological solution to this problem that will satisfy all except the real down in the dirt folks (the hard core plant people, in other words). And if we don't find it, when the last baby boomer dies, we will have sold our last raw herb formula. Chinese Herbs FAX:

Also that is incorrect for many of the others and i have spoken to Chris and he concurred that not all are 5:1. Bioessence is not a Taiwanese company they are US comp. All the writing you refer to are by Chris. Just talk to any practitioner from Taiwan and you will see that in general they use formulas with additions.
