Guest guest
Dear Colleagues Many of the details about the 2004 conference can now be found at http://www..org/conference_04.html The registration desk is open and space is limited. We (CHA and our sponsors) are very excited about this year's event. It looks to be as good or even better than last year. The theme is plurality in practice, inspired by Volker Scheid's recent work illustrating this essential facet of CM: Diversity rooted in tradition. The speakers represent a continuum of styles and philosophies from that rooted in the most ancient to the most modern. Bob Flaws will be giving the keynote address. Bob and Blue Poppy have been important contributors to the field for many, many years. I chose Bob to keynote in honor of his tireless contribution (everyone always wonders how someone could produce so much work under any circumstances), but also because of his often unrecognized contribution to the development of a pluralistic medicine in the US. While Bob and I share some very specific key goals vis a vis research-based evidence and development of consensus standards, Bob was also a founding member of the national alliance, a group devoted to maintaining diversity in the field. BP's books range from strict TCM to taoist to classical to integrative to innovative. The thread the ties these various endeavors together has always been rigor. I look forward to hearing what Bob has to say about how we should collectively and constructively approach our future Representing the most ancient, Heiner Fruehauf will be presenting for the first time his unpublished research on the symbology of the classical texts and characters. Heiner has been working on this material for five years and believes the material has come to maturity and is very clinically relevant. Heiner also just opened a healing center and conference hall in the columbia river gorge in Oregon. He also leads an annual trip to China that has been lauded by all who have joined him for over a decade now. David Frierman, co- author of BP's new nephrology text, will be speaking to the issue of herbs that raise the yang. Bob Damone, co-translator of the upcoming Jiao Shu De's ten lectures on medicinals, will be speaking on his explorations in premodern cases. This is a newly revised version of one ofmy favorite CEU classes of all time. Bob's co-translator on this book needs no introduction. Craig Mitchell will return for an encore performance this year. Misha Cohen will round things out with a presentation on the role of research based evidence in clinical practice. Misha has long been involved in research protocols, dating back to her pioneering work on HIV disease in the late 80's and early 90's. We are also very excited about this year's exhibit hall: Language Learning Workshop: Sponsored by Redwing Books. This exhibit will feature software and books you can try with experts to guide you. Bob Damone and Craig Mitchell, co- translators of Ten Lectures on Chinese Medicinal Formulas by Jiao Shu De (not yet released), will be on hand to answer your questions about the process of learning to read Chinese. Bob is currently doing advanced Chinese language studies and Craig teaches medical Chinese at the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine. Exhibit and Demonstration Hall: The CHA conference is cooperative venture between CHA and our sponsors. In gratitude for sponsorship, CHA has organized an innovative demonstration and exhibit hall to complement our continuing education lectures. This year, our sponsors will have a stage of their own. Each vendor will give a scheduled presentation as well as be available to answer questions at their booth. The vendor stage will open to all licensed acupuncturists and TCM students for FREE. And if you visit the demonstration hall, you can also attend the evening party, even if you did not register for the conference. Hope to see you all there.
