I don't think it exists much in the California > official texts. The July 14, 2003 hearing of the CA Acupuncture Board proposed modified text of their ruling to include under section 6, Clinical Medicine, Patient Assessment and Diagnosis: " Pharmacological asessment emphasizing side-effects and herb-drug interactions " With the new Chen MM including herb-drug interactions and at least the rumor mill on the to-be-updated Bensky-Gamble MM emphasizing herb- drug interaction, I'd wager that the CA's usual pattern of following select texts is already underway. About the to-be-updated Bensky-Gamble MM, I got the following information from Eastland Press: " A new editon of the materia medica is scheduled for publication this summer. More information will be available later in the spring. " Best wishes Alwin

The Little Hoover Commision is supposed to render it's final opinions this coming fall 2004. This may change the face of the practice of CM in California. Among some of the things that may change: scope of practice, designation as a primary care provider, the inclusion of a licensed acupuncture assistant, and the adoption of the NCCAOM national test (instead of the CA exam). I do not know how likely it is for the CA Board to spend time and money now to change things when big changes may be not too far away. Brian C. If anything, I believe they will require the National in addition to the State exam. Having been an " expert test writer " for the board, I know they spend allot of time and money making it into a fair exam. Teresa

Everything I mentioned is up for consideration. Whether or not there will be changes is another story. Also, the Little Hoover Commision may be asking the very question, " Why should anyone spend a lot of time and money on a CA exam when a National Exams already exists. " The Little Hoover Commision is in charge of evaluating and cutting the fat, among other things. Brian C. Allen
