Guest guest
While others exist and are under development to varying degrees............nothing can compete with Virtual PC 6 at this stage. Virtual PC 7 is getting close to release and is supposed to be a huge leap in performance over all previous versions. It will support the G5 and direct use of existing graphics cards rather than emulation of this also. It is recommended that you do not use Windows XP as it is a resource hog. Windows 95 is too old and not supported in most new software. Therefore Windows 2000 Pro is the best balance.......it has most of the features of Windows XP but none of the graphical bloat which slows down the system. The other option for running Windows software on the Mac is via Remote Desktop software. With this approach you basically connect a Windows XP Pro or 2000 Pro system and your Mac in a network. The remote desktop software allows you to control the PC from your Mac. The advantage of this approach is that you use a full power PC and get performance to match. The disadvantage is that you need 2 computers to achieve this. Windows 2000 Pro is great for data crunching, but offers terrible graphics support in comparison to Windows XP Home Edition. If you need to run PC software that is graphics intensive, it is much better to use Windows XP Home Ed., as it offers far better graphics and audio support than either XP Pro or 2000 Pro. (Some graphics intensive programs don't run on 2000 Pro at all). Before choosing an emulation program, first look at what PC software you want to run, and what you need to be able to do. If you need heavy graphics support, you'll want to run XP Home Edition (its less resource intensive, with better graphics/audio support than Pro Edition), so Virtual PC isn't your best choice. If you need to run data-crunching business software that isn't terribly graphics or audio intenstive, Virtual PC is a very good choice. It really depends on what you need, and what OS the software will run on. As for non-NT platform versions of Windows, Millennium can be quite glitchy and unreliable, and 98 S.E. is no longer supported by Microsoft (but still a reliable OS that will run graphics/data intensive programs just fine, for now). There are several PC emulation programs available, as Steven pointed out. Which one is best depends on what you need it to do. SoftMac XP v 8.20 Suite has been optimized for performance on Windows XP, and supports all Windows formats. If you need graphics and audio capabilities, its your best choice. Virtual PC 6 is optomized for business versions of Windows, but also runs well on the older versions of Windows. It does not run well on either version of Windows XP. You may find some useful information on cross-platform integration at the MacWindows website, http://www.macwindows.com/, (although the site seems to favor Microsoft products, just as an f.y.i). Guest guest
If you need to run windows programs on a mac laptop for portability, an emulation program is your only real choice. However, if you will be running the programs in the office or at home I would suggest buying an older PC and networking it if you want to run the programs through your mac. All Windows emulation programs really are VERY slow as they emulate something in the range of a slow PII windows system without hardware support (graphics cards etc). A cheap PIII box placed under a desk or in a cupboard for that matter and networked with your mac will give you much better performance and may even be cheaper. Virtual PC plus a Windows OS may be more expensive than buying a reasonably fast second hand PC box. Remote Desktop Connection is the software you need to setup this network and it is free form Microsoft.
