NEWS from The JCM summarises recent research in AP and Chinese medicine, as well as diet, lifestyle, exercise, relaxation and meditation and other miscellaneous subjects. Much of this information will help practitioners to accurately inform patients of the benefits or risks of lifestyle choices and give informed answers to patients’ questions, aid in the practice of preventive medicine and help practitioners take care of their own health. NEWS 75 IS NOW PUBLISHED AND INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ITEMS AP FOR CHRONIC HEADACHE: AP has demonstrated a clear long-term benefit for patients suffering from chronic headaches. 401 patients were randomly assigned to receive either individualised AP treatment (12 treatments over 3 months), or normal care from their general practitioner (control). At 12 months after the onset of treatment, headache scores in the AP group fell by 34% (versus 16% in the control group), with 22 fewer days of headache a year. They took 15% less medication, made 25% fewer doctor visits, and took 15% fewer days off work. The AP group also showed statistically significant improvements in quality of life, as measured by the SF-36 health status questionnaire, specifically in physical role functioning, energy and change in overall health. The greatest improvements were found in patients with migraine. In another paper by the same research team, it was found that the cost- effectiveness of giving AP compared favourably with other health service interventions. The authors note that “each week 10% of general practitioners in England either refer patients to AP or practise it themselves, and headache is one of the most commonly treated conditions” and conclude that “AP in addition to standard care results in persisting, clinically relevant benefits for primary care patients with chronic headache, particularly migraine, compared with controls. Expansion of NHS AP services for headache should be considered.” (BMJ, doi:10.1136/bmj.38029.421863, 15 March 2004) . AP & PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE: In a single-blind, placebo- controlled crossover study, 12 male volunteers (aged 21-26) were tested using cycle spiroergometry (measurement of oxygen uptake during bicycle exercising). Prior to exercising, volunteers received true AP at different points, placebo AP or no AP. Needling of points Hegu LI04 and Zusanli ST36 was found to result in an increased maximum work load and significantly increased work load and oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold. (Deutsche Zeitschrift fur Akupunktur, 47. January 2004, pp.6-17). AP & MALE INFERTILITY: In a small Brazilian study, 19 male patients with sperm abnormalities (sperm count, motility and morphology) were randomly assigned to receive true (treatment group) or sham (control group) AP and moxibustion treatment. The treatment group were needled at Qichong ST30, Taixi KI03, Zusanli ST36, Hegu LI0, Sanyinjiao SP06, Gongsun SP04, Taichong LV03 and Neiguan PC06 (with deqi), and received moxibustion (until the skin was reddened) at Shenshu BL23, Zhishi BL52, Sanjiaoshu BL22, Mingmen GV04, Ciliao BL32, Qihai CV06, Guanyuan CV04, Zhongji CV03, Pishu BL20, Weishu BL21, Shimen CV05, Taiyuan LU09, Feishu BL13, Gaohuangshu BL43, Xinshu BL15 and Zigong (Uterus Pt, M-CA-18). Treatment was given twice a week for 10 weeks. The control group received needling and moxibustion at non- points. At the end of treatment, patients in the treatment group showed a significant improvement in sperm morphology ( i.e. normally formed sperm). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of seminal fluid volume, sperm count or motility. (Asian J Androl 2003 Dec; 5: 345-348). DAOIST MEDICINE CLINIC SET UP IN BEIJING: Beijing’s first Daoist clinic has been established in the White Cloud Temple, the only extant Daoist temple in the Chinese capital. Three Daoists and ten Chinese herbalists will treat patients with traditional Chinese herbal medicines, Daoist regimens and AP. On the first and fifteenth days in each Chinese lunar month, poor people will enjoy preferential treatments in the clinic. The clinic includes internal medicine, dermatological and needle therapy departments. Daoist regimens are deeply related with traditional Chinese medicine, and there is an old saying " nine out of ten Daoists are doctors " , said Li Yulin, a Daoist with the White Cloud Temple.
