I recently received an email regarding a bill coming up for a vote in the

Senate in the next few days, S.2400

National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005

In the email I received they said: " the Senate will be considering

amendments to a

Department of Defense funding bill, S. 2400. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) -

whose continued campaign against nutritional supplements in the name of

" safety " threatens your future access to supplements, your freedom and your

health - has introduced an amendment to this bill that will restrict access

to certain dietary supplements on military bases and place reporting

requirements on manufacturers that are even stricter than those for

over-the-counter drugs.

I oppose this amendment and ask that you tell your Senators to oppose it,

too.

Durbin's amendment requires that manufacturers of dietary supplements who

sell to the military implement a system where serious adverse events are

reported to the FDA for all products containing stimulant ingredients, with

exception of caffeine. Just one complaint of a serious adverse reaction

attributed to a dietary supplement would give the FDA license to remove

entire classes of supplements (hundreds of products) from the market, even

if that product was used against manufacturer's instructions. This nefarious

bill is singling out " stimulants " - a sure step towards banning such

supplements altogether.

But mark my words; virtually all nutritional supplements are at risk "

Anyone know anything about this? Seems like it could easily impact Chinese

herbal medicine, since our prepared herbal formulas still fall under DSHEA.
