Guest guest
http://health.shennong ..doc this document formats for me in wordpad on my PC, but does not open on my mac because I can't seem to get the chinese language features to work on OSX. I have no idea if it opens in word on a properly configured computer. let me know. and if you can make a PDF, put it up on the site for other mac users who find using chinese on a mac to be like pulling teeth. Guest guest
Hi Todd This file doesn't format for me correctly on a PC. It doesn't show the chinese characters though I have configured my PC correctly for chinese languages. Otherwise I could have made a PDF on my PC. So I think the file no longer has its correct character coding. Guest guest
This is not a Mac problem..........it is a MS Office issue. Office V.X has no unicode or chinese support, especially excel and word.....I have managed to get entourage to show chinese characters at times. Limited viewing is possible if you use Japanese encoding to view characters in Word X, but pinyin with tones is impossible as far as I know. However, the rumour is that Office 2004 for Mac now has chinese AND unicode support. Typing chinese characters in OSX is simple enough, there are many different options for input style. You must have the language packs installed and then enable them in the International preferences. When you want to type in chinese, click on the flag on the finder window and change to chinese. I hope this helps a bit. MS does allow for tones, I use them all the time. THis is just a compatability issue ( I think.) (I think this is what you were talking about.) I d/l the file and I finally see what you guys are talking about, the formatting is nice for learning and wenlin DOESNOT do this, so I was wrong... > > However, the rumour is that Office 2004 for Mac now has chinese AND > unicode support. > > Typing chinese characters in OSX is simple enough, there are many > different options for input style. Perhaps you missed my post from a few of days ago? I'm guessing it slipped by unnoticed. Microsoft Office does support Pinyin. I use it all the time. The easiest way to write Pinyin documents in Word or Excel is to use a conversion macro that allows you to easily turn Pinyin with numbers to indicate tones, into Pinyin with tone marks. You just write your document using the numbers to indicate the tones, then run your Macro. Very simple. The macros, which take only minutes to set up, and just seconds to use, can be found at: http://www.csulb.edu/~txie/PINYIN/pinyin.htm I Hope this helps! Kindest Regards, Andrea
Guest guest
Thanks Andrea, Your post didn't go by unnoticed.........however, our problem is specific to MS Office on the Mac. MS have been " lazy " , to say the least, by not including Unicode and Chinese support in the Mac version. I actually downloaded and tried to Macro's you suggested; but the Mac version will only display the 2nd and 4th tones of pinyin (probably due to these symbols being in european languages). I know MS Office for windows does not have these problems and MS Office 2004 for the Mac is said to address these issues also. Guest guest
Yes, Wenlin and Chinese documents can be transferred seamlessly to MS Word/Office 2004. For those of us with Macs, the upgrade is probably worth it. I know it is for me. Guest guest
Hi Steve, Perhaps this will help. =-) I did a little searching to see what I could turn up for Macintosh pinyin utilities, particularly for MS Word, and I found macros to use in Word on the Mac! The same site also has Pinyin fonts and other utilities available in both Windows & Mac versions, all for free. Worth taking a look at. You can find everything at the following url: http://www.foolsworkshop.com/easytone/ Installing the pinyin fonts would probably be helpful, too. You can download the macros for Word on the Mac directly from this link: http://www.foolsworkshop.com/easytone/Tones.dot.sit.hqx The macros are in stuffit format. Hopefully, this will sort out the problems you're having in Word. I agree that upgrading to Office 2004 is probably the way to go, in the long run. I made the upgrade earlier this year (PC version), and I'm very happy that I did, as there were some key improvements in a few programs I use regularly. I hear the improvements are even greater in the Mac version. Cheers! Andrea
