Perhaps Bob will comment, but I do not believe Redwing earns its money from the retail sales of books, but rather from the wholesale distribution to resellers. I know Bob does not like what amazon has done to the book market, but if I thought affiliating with them actually injured redwing, I wouldn't have done it. the fact is despite the so-called economic recovery, we live in very difficult economic times and and I only think that will get worse as time passes. That means a huge portion of the population will be permanently relegated to shop for bargains. How many of you can afford to buy all your computer equipment from small local shops rather than search for the best deals online? It is a terrible catch 22. If you support small companies that must charge a lot to make ends meet, then most people will have only limited access to necessary goods (like the library necessary to study and practice or the technology to facilitate these things). They will then never improve in their understanding and have even less chance of future success. OTOH, if you support the large companies, you run a real risk of the small companies just disappearing altogether. This will lead to a much reduced selection of books on the market at all, especially those of an alternative nature. Virtually everyone I know ALREADY buys their books from amazon and this is not going to change as long as economics does not change. CHA was attempting to capture some of that money that would already go to amazon anyway. However if you are able to afford a purchase from a small bookseller, I actually would make that my strongest recommendation. but if you are going to patronize amazon anyway, why not support CHA at the same time?
