Guest guest
Dear Friends at Chinese Herbal Medicine: As co-chair for the upcoming Society for Acupuncture Research Conference to be held in San Francisco in San Francisco in October, I am sending along the following invitation to participate. I have lobbied successfully for a special workshop called `Challenges to conducting research on Chinese herbal medicine'. There will also be both oral and poster presentations on Chinese herbal medicine research at this conference. I encourage participation in this international event by Chinese herbalists--this is an important way to increase our relationships with university-based and community-based researchers in Chinese medicine and build towards more herbal studies that truly reflect the practice of Chinese herbal medicine. Please contact me at TCMPaths if you would like to discuss this more and, of course, within this CHA forum. For registration to the Conference, please contact saracupuncture. Yours in health, Misha From the SAR Co-Presidents: You are cordially invited to attend our 11th annual Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) symposium to be held October 1-3, in San Francisco at the Radisson Miyako Hotel. As you well know, research on acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is crucial for promoting the integration of these ancient treatments into mainstream medicine. Following the landmark 1997 NIH Consensus Conference on Acupuncture, SAR has provided an annual forum for the presentation of newly emerging research data on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The 2004 Symposium continues this rich tradition of keynote talks, oral and poster presentations and panel discussions. Highlights of research to be presented include studies using state of the art medical technology, such as functional MRI and quantitative real-time ultrasound imaging, to explore acupuncture mechanisms. Results of large scale clinical trials of acupuncture in England and Germany will also be presented. This year's panel discussions will focus on: `Challenges to conducting research on Chinese herbal medicine', and `Designs for community and acupuncture/TCM school based research'. You will also enjoy taking part in one of the special interest luncheon discussion groups. Two distinguished speakers, Dr. Donald I. Abrams and Dr. Suzanne Dibble, will give keynote speeches. On Friday evening Dr. Abrams, Chief of Hematology-Oncology at San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Professor of Medicine and a world renowned HIV/AIDS leader and researcher, will discuss " West Meets East: Issues in Researching TCM and CAM Interventions " . The talk will reflect his rich history of studying CAM and herbal interventions in both hospital and community-based settings. Dr. Dibble, UCSF Associate Professor from the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging whose focus is breast cancer, aging issues and lesbian health, will speak on the challenges for researchers in studying Asian medicine within a university setting in " Research Challenges of Acupressure and Acupuncture Trials " Another feature of this year's SAR Symposium will be a pre-conference half-day workshop, `How to critique clinical trials of acupuncture', conducted by Drs. Hugh MacPherson and Richard Hammerschlag. The workshop is free if you are an SAR affiliate. Attached please find the brochure of the Symposium. You can also find more information at our website: acupunctureresearch.org Please register today! Should you have any questions regarding the Symposium and SAR, please e-mail us at saracupuncture. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco! Helene Langevin Lixing Lao Co-president Co-president
