Guest guest
Hello, I'm about to recive a patient with a problem of Sunlight skin sensitivity. If she goes out to the sun for more then a couple of minutes, a red and itchy skin rash appears, to the point of been unable to go outside during the day time. The doctors didnt diagnose any specific skin disease. i cant treat it according to regulaar dermatological diagnostic methods, but was wandering if anyone had experience with this specific symptom? Thank You, Dan.L

I have a few thoughts about what you said above: 1. If no skin disease was diagnosed, then I am not sure why you would think about dermatological diagnostic methods. Are there better ways to appoach it? I do not know. 2. For instance, something like a malar flush as seen in a yin xu heat condition, though seen on the skin, would not be treated as a dermatological condition. 3. The condition sounds like a histamine problem. Increased histamine production from sun exposure is not uncommon among those with histamine irregularities. Other factors, such as diet and other exposures, can make the sun problem worse. I am not sure how to frame this into Chinese medical concepts. 4. Please keep us posted. I am very interested in what you end up doing and what kind results you get. Brian C. Allen
Guest guest
Hi Danny, I had a patient with a problem like this a while ago, I was surprised to find out how many prescription and OTC meds can cause problems with sun allergy. I found this partial list just now on the internet, but add anything with citrus oils, as they potentiate irritation by the sun allot and are very common in scents. a.. Photoallergic eruption - In this form of sun allergy, a skin reaction is triggered by the effect of sunlight on a chemical that has been applied to the skin (often an ingredient in sunscreen, fragrances, cosmetics or antibiotic ointments) or ingested in a drug (often a prescription medicine). Common prescription medicines that can cause a photoallergic eruption include antibiotics (especially tetracyclines and sulfonamides), phenothiazines used to treat psychiatric illness, diuretics for high blood pressure and heart failure, and certain oral contraceptives. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also has linked some cases of photoallergic reaction to the nonprescription pain relievers ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve, Naprosyn and others). from: intilihealth.com http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/9339/25934.html Of course there are also apparently a lot of people who just have a problem with the sun. The woman that I was treating had a fairly substantial blood vacuity, liver qi, and a liver spleen disharmony and my working hypothesis was that the blood vacuity let her wei qi float, prompting overwhelming responses to stimulation. Never got a Dx from an MD, but she was on BCP's and took a number of painkillers on the above list. She also had dermagraphia, which I have never seen in a patient who wasn't blood deficient, though I can imagine it could happen. The formula I used was xiao yao san with some extra blood nourishing herbs (her MC was premenstrual liver qi issues) I didn't add much wind clearing stuff, I think I just used jing jie, and maybe fang feng as I was worried about damaging blood further. I can't say that the skin stuff was all better, but it improved substantially by the time she moved out of state (a couple of months of treatment). She also used some blood nourishing topicals I made, which included some anti-itching herbs for exacerbations.
