Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I'm perplexed about a skin condition I get on my hands in the summers, ever since I moved to San Diego. The skin simply sloughs off my hands and fingers, always on yin surfaces. I starts on the thumb and middle finger, then to the other fingers, each summer involving more fingers and more skin that the previous year. The areas that are denuded are red, hot and painful, and the peeling starts with small circles that gradually enlarge in irregular shapes. In general, my hands are dry, and I prefer them that way. I just spent a week in the high desert where it was hotter than here, but drier, and the redness went out of the peeled areas and the pain went away. Now I am back in San Diego 2 days only, and the redness and pain have returned. Any ideas what this might be, or how to treat it? So far, I've been able to conclude that damp heat aggravates it (damp more than heat), but it goes away in the cool, dry fall and cool, moist winter. I went to Kaiser, but they don't have a clue. Guest guest
Andrea, Also Fire toxin(along with damp heat) was one of the major patterns that Mazin discussed when addressing lesions on the palms and soles, either dry, red or pompholyx type. There is a palmar psoriasis which usaully has pustular lesions on the feet or hands, the pustules start yellow but quickly turn brown and there is often pronounced fissuring, itching is mild. He says this is usually fire toxin and damp heat but he also uses cool the blood medicinals with much erythema and blood movers and tonics with fissuring. I do have a bunch of recipes(that is what Mazin calls them) if you want them, Jill

So far, I've been able I do not know what to tell you about treatment, but it may be more useful to hash out the etiology first. Rather than looking to weather as the culprit, consider some sort of behavior, something that you regularly contact with your hands, since moving to the San Diego, that you did not do / contact before you moved here, and that you did not do / contact while on vacation. Maybe a pet, a hand-soap, exercise equipment, steering wheel, massage oil, etc. Brian C. Allen
Guest guest
Hi Andrea Beth I experienced this as well, when I was a teenager. Western Med has classified it as Dishydrosis. They gave me a steroid creme which, of course, worked well, however I ended up with thickened skin on my palms, I believe, as a result (and who knows about liver toxicity!). The only times I get it any more are during high stress times or on exposure to detergents, like dish washing liquid. I use a " green " dish liquid now and get no problems and mediate my stress with meditation and/or acu-herbs. Did you wash dishes in AZ? If not, you may want to think about this route i.o. chemical sensitivy/ " allergy " of your skin. Do you use regular dish liquids at home? Guest guest
Hi Jill, No, there aren't any pustules or vesicles - it's all completely dry and flat, and red wherever the skin has most recently receded. It rarely itches - and only before peeling starts. I will check out the article you mentioned. Thank you, Andrea Beth " Jill A.
