Dear CHA Members

As co-chair of this year's Society for Acupuncture Research Symposium

in San

Francisco, I would like to remind you of this important annual

conference. Much of

the current research in the acupuncture and Chinese herb field is

first presented at

this symposium.

If you belong to an organization that sends several people, your

organization is

eligible for a discount. Teachers, your students may come for $75.

Anyone who is at a

school or community organization can also learn how to do field-based

research.

I would also like to encourage all those who are interested in herbal

research to

attend as we have planned special panels and lunch sessions regarding

herbal

research.

I am also looking for a panel member from CHA to help me present on

herbal

research at the conference herb panel--Todd is unable to do so. If

you are interested,

please send me an e-mail with your info at TCMPaths.

Here is the invitation from the Presidents of the Society.

Dear Friends:

You are cordially invited to attend our Society for Acupuncture

Research (SAR) 11th

annual symposium to be held October 1-3, in San Francisco at the

Radisson Miyako

Hotel.

As you well know, research on acupuncture and Traditional Chinese

Medicine (TCM)

is crucial for promoting the integration of these ancient treatments

into mainstream

medicine.  Following the landmark 1997 NIH Consensus Conference on

Acupuncture,

SAR has provided an annual forum for the presentation of newly

emerging research

data on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.  The 2004

Symposium continues

this rich tradition of keynote talks, oral and poster presentations

and panel

discussions.

Highlights of research to be presented include studies using state of

the art medical

technology, such as functional MRI and quantitative real-time

ultrasound imaging, to

explore acupuncture mechanisms.  Results of large scale clinical

trials of acupuncture

in England and Germany will also be presented.  This year's

panel discussions will

focus on: `Challenges to conducting research on Chinese herbal

medicine', and

`Designs for community and acupuncture/TCM school based

research'.  You will also

enjoy taking part in one of the special interest luncheon discussion

groups.

Two distinguished speakers, Dr. Donald I. Abrams and Dr. Suzanne

Dibble, will give

keynote speeches. On Friday evening Dr. Abrams, Chief of

Hematology-Oncology at

San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Professor of Medicine and a

world renowned

HIV/AIDS leader and researcher, will discuss " West Meets East: Issues

in Researching

TCM and CAM Interventions " .  The talk will reflect his rich

history of studying CAM

and herbal interventions in both hospital and community-based

settings. Dr. Dibble,

UCSF Associate Professor from the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging

whose focus is

breast cancer, aging issues and lesbian health, will speak on the

challenges for

researchers in studying Asian medicine within a university setting in

" Research

Challenges of Acupressure and Acupuncture Trials "

Another feature of this year's SAR Symposium will be a

pre-conference half-day

workshop, `How to critique clinical trials of acupuncture',

conducted by Drs. Hugh

MacPherson and Richard Hammerschlag.  The workshop is free if you

are an SAR

affiliate.

Misha,

Thank you for announcing this. I just wish outsiders could get more advance

notice for these events. I just looked at my calendar, and much as I would

like to attend, I have patients scheduled (as I am sure most busy

practitioners do). How can we know, say 3-6 months in advance of these

conferences?

I would like to nominate Stephen Morrisey if he is still lurking out there. I

have counted on

Steve over the years to give fair, accurate reporting of research. But even

more important

is his deep understanding of the many issues surrounding quality resaearch.

Hi Julie:

I posted this about 4-6 weeks ago in the CHA forum.

This is just a reminder notice.

I am sorry you missed the first post.

Unfortunately, I am not the organizer, just the local chair of the

conference. I agree

that this should have more notice.

There is no fulltime person involved in SAR, just a part-time

conference organizer. I

will pass this along to the Board, however.

The SAR conference begins Friday evening and goes through Sunday noon

for those

who might want to attend--it would be great if more practicing

herbalists would

attend as the issues in research are quite different than for

acupuncture (as Todd has

been pointing out as well)

Yours, Misha
