It is an excellent book if you are interested in the chemistry of the plants

and in pharmaceutical and clinical studies (all western oriented). I would

say that for this part, this is one of the very best books available in the

English language. If you are looking for Chinese medical info, there is

absolutely no point in buying this book.

Alon

It is this book

Chinese materia medica

You Ping Zhu

ISBN 9-0570-2285-0

It had been recommended to me as " the ultimate book, the only one you

would need, Bensky but then more and better " and more superlatives

like that. But that was indeed by someone who has a more 'western'

and less traditional viewpoint on Chinese medicine.

I was interested how others feel about this book.

Best wishes

I'll second that - it's my favorite source for pharmacology/phytochemistry info

on Chinese herbs. It does not claim to be a TCM textbook and does not discuss

TCM functions, etc. Chen and Chen or Bensky are best for that. Chen and Chen is

perhaps the best reference for both TCM and pharmacological-toxicological data,

but Chen and Chen tends to emphasize essential oil content and often ignores

other constituents that are discussed in much greater detail in the You Ping Zhu
