Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

I need to find someone in the NYC/NJ area who deals a lot with

pregnant women and is familiar with Intrahepatic Cholestasis of

Pregnancy (ICP). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have treated this once when it lingered post parturition with severe pruritis.

I used

typical herbs one might use in stones or cholecystitis. It worked like magic,

but only at

the branch level. However that was that was need as the pathology usually

clears itself.

In this particular case, the concern is more about preventing damage

to the baby.

This is kind of funny, Bob; it made me laugh anyway.

However, because it has been said many times before on this forum when

people start talking about Western diseases, I think that there will

always be those who just do not get the point.

I agree, someone can come to me with " ASDFKLASK234* & ^(* asdhjsda "

disease (intentional gibberish), and I would still do a regular

assessment based on my training in and treat

according to pattern.

I suppose this brings up an interesting question about the ethics and legality

of treating

pregnant women with herbs. No malpractice insurance I am aware of actually

truly covers

damage to the fetus. Your broker may have told you differently, but you should

have a

lawyer look at your policy. Brokers lie. Its their job to sell you something

whether you

need it or not and whether it gives you the coverage you need or not.

chinese herbs in general have not even remotely been proven safe to the fetus.

If you got

sued for an adverse effect, you would not be able to compile the evidence to

defend

yoursef. The chinese prohibitions on herbs during pregnacy refers only to

avoiding

miscarriage. the chinese had no real idea of teratogenic effects caused by

pharmacological agents, for example. So there is a potential liability

nightmare here from

which I steer 1000 miles clear in my practice.

In CA, one of the questions that will have to be addressed as a result of the

LHC report is

what conditions we can legally treat. CA law says we can treat " certain "

conditions, not

ALL conditions. Due to the incredibly high risk associated with Obstetrics,

this is an area

we have to fight to maintain. And this will, of course, have repercussions

throughout the

US. While convservatives pose as free traders, the reality for our field is

that " blue " states

have far less restrictions on practice regarding OM than " red " states. I

believe the only

states that do not allow acupuncture practice are red states. So it will be

interesting to

see whether conservative red state governments loosen restrictions on

acupuncture

practice or clamp down even more on scope in the next few years. I will be

watching with

great interest, though likely from abroad.

Now, can anybody recomend someone in the NY/NJ area who is competent

to deal with a pregnant woman with a very serious condition?
