I\'ve been practicing in Italy for the last two years, and I believe the above statement to be slightly misleading inasmuch as it implies that Chinese medicinals are unavailable without prescription in this country. In claiming that acupuncturists do not dispense herbs, Mr. Flaws is substantially correct in that acupuncturists, as medici (medical doctors), typically write prescriptions. It is not necessary, however, to visit an acupuncturist or a pharmacy in order to obtain Chinese medicinals. They are available over-the-counter, predominantly in what are commonly known as “Chinese pharmacies,” though legally they are not designated as pharmacies. Erboristerie (herb shops), on the other hand, can carry things Chinese but rarely do, restricting themselves rather to products targeted to a bourgeois esthetic, including popular creams promising to “vanish” cellulite (where vanish is elegantly transitive). Most Chinese medicinals sold in Italy are distributed by Shen Lon in Rome (www.shenlon.com) and packaged by Medboom, a subsidiary of CMC Tasly in Amsterdam (see www.medboom.com). Most patent medicines originate from the Lanzhou Foci Herbal Factory. The good news is that legally imported products are all G.M.P. certified and have instructions in up to 24 languages. The rest of the news is bad: Medboom vitually holds a monopoly and prices are multiplied at every stage of distribution.
