Tom,

Chen & Chen in their new materia medica state that tian hua fen is

associated with termination of pregnancy. They site that the proposed

mechanism of action is that it has a direct effect on placental villi and

trophocytes leading to necrosis and death of cells. It further stimulates

the smooth muscle contraction of the uterus. Looks like the teratogenic

effect was my misinterpretation.

They state that in China, tian hua fen injectable is used for abortions. It

has been used intramuscularly as well as directly injected in the amniotic

sac. Seems that traces if injected that way may be still present in the

patient up to six years later and it seems to cause higher than average

early delivery in subsequent pregnancies.

They also go on to state that although used quite a bit for diabetes, tian

hua fen is shown to actually increase blood glucose levels.

They theroize that while diabetes is diagnosed through blood glucose levels,

the symptoms of xiao ke - thirst, profuse urination, hunger are addressed by

the heat clearing and yin fluid building nature of tian hua fen.

They also make a statement about the use in overall formulas contrasted to

individual effect. In sum, they state that the even though tian hua fen does

not lower blood glucose directly, it does address the xiao ke symptoms.

I could not tell you if the complications to pregnancy are mitigated by

formulaic administration, and also can't address how/why tian hua fen is

used in pregnancy in China, but would like to hear more.

Fascinating learning more though - perhaps we'll get some other input into

tian hua fen use.

I didn't know that. It is being used in China though, during

pregnancy. Could it be that the teratogenic effect is lost in the

formula?

I'm not sure how much the patient will comply though now. It has

come to my attention yesterday that she only took one ji until now,

and that she now places more emphasis on western medical treatment.

I already gave her some diet advice, don't know how she will comply.

She seems to say yes to me, and then do something else. Talked a

long time with her though.
