Guest guest
Hi All, To access free FULL-TEXT articles on your areas of interest, open www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search & DB=pmc and enter your required search profile, such as: 1341 hits on (nutraceut* OR (therapy AND (vitamin* OR antioxid* OR free radical* OR mineral OR trace element* OR (health ADJ supplem*))) 414 hits on (LLLT OR low level laser OR transcutaneous-electrical- nerve) 290 hits on (physical ther* OR physiother*) 106 hits on ((hypnosis OR hypnot* OR autogenic OR biofeedback OR visualis*) AND therapy) 101 hits on (herbal medic* OR (herbal AND formula*) OR kampo OR kanpo OR phytotherapy) 100 hits on (acupu* OR acupo* OR moxibustion) 99 hits on ((prevent* OR " control of " OR " treatment of " OR therapy) AND (trace element* OR trace mineral*) ADJ (deficienc* OR imbalance*)) 90 hits on (acupressure OR tuina OR massage) [none on guasha] 64 hits on (homeopath* OR homoeopath* OR isopath*) 17 hits on (aromatherapy OR reflexology) NOTE: Some hits for a selected profile are irrelevant, or do not even mention the required keywords. I do not understand how this can arise unless hidden keywords are tacked onto the returned files. Here is one useful excerpt that came out of the acup* search: H MacPherson, K Thomas, S Walters & M Fitter (2001) The York AP safety study: prospective survey of 34 000 treatments by traditional acupuncturists. BMJ. 2001 September 1; 323(7311): 486–487: Correspondence to: H MacPherson hugh: In this prospective survey, no serious adverse events were reported after 34 407 AP treatments. This is consistent, with 95% confidence, with an underlying serious adverse event rate of 0 to 1.1/10 000 treatments. This conclusion was based on data collected over a 4-week period by 33% of the members of the BAC. Even given the potential bias of self reporting, this is important evidence on public health and safety as professional acupuncturists deliver approximately 2M treatments per year in the UK. Comparison of this adverse event rate for AP with those of drugs routinely prescribed in primary care suggests that AP is a relatively safe form of treatment.5 Further research measuring patients' experience of adverse events is merited.
