Haven't read it yet but there is a review of it by Mazin Al-Khafija in the

latest issue of the Journal of Ch. Med - also available on-line.

Jason-

I just flipped through a copy that a colleague of mine purchased. It

looks very good. Lots of color plates, good descriptions of the

pathomechanisms, and seems very thorough. A Chinese instructor from

our school who specialized in dermatology said she liked it very

much, and the only thing she would have changed is to give more of a

selection of formulas for each disease and pattern. FWIW

I've read sections of it, and I would say it is a definite improvement on

the other derm texts I've seen. There are a fair number of cases for any

given disorder, usually at least one per pattern dx, cogent explanations of

formulas, as well as a wealth of novel to me topical formulas. It does have

some color plates, and since it is organized by western dx I suppose you

could supplement with a western text on skin disorders. I found the plates

were a little less than I thought they could be considering the thorough

nature of other aspects of the book... but full on plates probably would

have made the cost go way up. There is also no racial diversity in the

plates, which weakens them to an extent. There is also some materia medica

in an appendix which are looked at in terms of treating itching and

recategorized according to how they do that. Itching has been a big deal

for most of my derm patients so this has been interesting and useful. It

has a nice section in the front on the differentiation of patterns based on

itching and other symptoms which goes a little beyond what I have read in

other places. Another way this book is useful is since many chinese texts

present their pattern differentiation as a fait accompli they don't really

generate flexable thinking about dermatology problems, and you end up

cursing the fact you can't use the recommended lead based ointment, or

hoping the western dx a patient walks in with is the right one, this allows

for some thinking and considering, and sometimes throws some options at you.

It's pretty well indexed and the format of the book makes it fairly

readable, its design is good, spine is OK and might last a while, as opposed

to another British imprint I could mention... I'd say it is worth sitting

down with for an hour and seeing if you want to drop a hundred dollars on,

which is more than I can say about a lot of books.

Perhaps someone will give it to you for the holidays, then you can return it

if you don't like it!
