Guest guest
I've had a number of good results working with these types of children, but I'd also say that from my experiences, limiting the modalities to TCM (herbs and acupuncture) will have a much less dramatic effect. There are a number of aggravating factors that should be considered in addition to TCM: junk food diet - artificial coloring agents, aspartame/Nutraweet, MSG excessive sugar television viewing inappropriate music listening fluorescent lighting toxicity from mercury (and other heavy metals), which in children comes mostly from vaccines - a mercury compound called thimerosal To read more about the relation between what some call CNS " excitotoxins " and CNS degenerative diseases: Blaylock, Russell; Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills; Health Press; c1996. Blaylock, Russell; " Excitotoxins, Neurodegeneration and Neurodevelopment " ; The Medical Sentinel Journal, c1998(?); In: webpage at {{http://www.dorway.com/blayenn.html}} In summary, remove all MSG (hidden in much processed food under " flavorings " , " spices " , etc.), artificial sweeteners, food dyes, and junk food generally, and minimize sugar intake. Some children these days watch up to 8 hours per day of TV, and there are so many studies to show how seriously this affects learning abilities, that every parent should take all the TVs in the home to the dump - or at least strictly limit viewing time to under several hours per week. Another effect that is co clear that researchers in the field say that no more studies need to be done, but instead, we should be doing research to understand why: much of the music of Mozart, Bach, and other clasical composers is especially good for learning disorders of all types. For background on this with references, see: http://www.rmhiherbal.org/review/2002-1.html Effects of music and sound on human health Many types of rock, rap, and other popular music also have dramatic negative effects - see above article - severe histologic changes in the hippocampus region of rodent brains can be observed after several weeks of exposure to rock music - corresponding to observed cannibalistic behavior and significantly decreased performance in maze negotiation tasks. Mozart, especially the early music he wrote as a child, seems to be especially good for autistic children - for whom both listening to and playing music may be the only way that practitioners can gain rapport with them, as they do not respond well to ordinary human communication, speech, or touch. Mercury and autism are thought by an increasing number of researchers to be linked. I instruct parents in how to implement a dietary detox program for mercury - I describe this process in my course material in a 40 page article. After comparing experiences with physicians and other practitioners in the various chelation methods, I believe the dietary protocol to be far safer than the drugs DMPS and DMSA, and just as effective, though it takes time, patience, and persistence. (Standard TCM herbal pattern-matching protocols are not effective for mercury detox, they may only temporarily mask its effects.) Excessive manganese (similar toxicity to lead when in excess) may also be a problem in learning and behavioral disorders - soybeans contains large amounts of manganese, and vegetarians who consume large amounts of soy may be at risk, in addition to the other problems of soy. See: http://www.rmhiherbal.org/review/2000-4.html Health fads from hell: margarine, canola oil, soy foods, green/black tea http://www.purdeyenvironment.com/ The Purdey Environmental Home Page: Organophosphates, BSE, CJD, Manganese, Copper, Scrapie, Prions, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Pesticides, Industrial Pollutants, Soils, Diet. (There was also an article in Townsend Journal this past year by Purdey on the subject of ferromagnetic heavy metals and neurodegenerative disease.) http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/vegemyths2.html The Myths of Vegetarianism by Stephen Byrnes, PhD, RNCP The thyroid suppressing effects of soy will also have negative consequences for learning disorders. Fluorescent lighting significantly decreases learning ability - the effects are almost immediate, both in exposure and withdrawal of this type of lighting. See: http://www.gvnr.com/67/2.htm Educators Looking At " Light Factor " In Learning Abilities Lack of full-spectrum light has impact not only on learning disorders, but is a factor in depression and vitamin D synthesis. ---Roger Wicke, PhD, TCM Clinical Herbalist contact: www.rmhiherbal.org/contact/ Rocky Mountain Herbal Institute, Hot Springs, Montana USA Clinical herbology training programs - www.rmhiherbal.org > < >Fwd: Autism/Pdd-nos > > > >louise1 >Re: Autism/Pdd-nos > >I'm a TCM student of Qing Bai (herbalism). Guest guest
Addendum to my previous post - I just stumbled onto this very short, but concise article on the mercury/thimerosal/autism controversy: http://educate-yourself.org/cn/mercuryvaccinesandmedicine13dec04.shtml Mercury, Vaccines and Medicine ---Roger Wicke, PhD, TCM Clinical Herbalist contact: www.rmhiherbal.org/contact/ Rocky Mountain Herbal Institute, Hot Springs, Montana USA Clinical herbology training programs - www.rmhiherbal.org

I would add emotional negligence by the parents to that list. Other diet factors would be sweet, cold and greasy foods, including dairy. Computer games, but more so with ADHD. Tom. Guest guest
Although thimerosol is listed as an agravating factor last on this list (which it also is), we should be aware that this substance has been shown by CDC data to cause it! Genetics seems to also be involved as some are more susceptible than others. This problem is found in many more boys than girls and is connected to testosterone. I hope we can share this info with others so that they can make a better informed choice. Later Mike W.
