Re: Berberine

What is berberine? I would appreciate any thoughts or information. A

patient concerned about his cholesterol imbalance said he wants to take

this and that it's a Chinese herb. I googled it and seems to be a

chemical compound that may have originated in huang lian? I'm not

sure it's a good thing for him to take and I have other options for him,

but I'd like to know more.

Berberine is a key constituent of Huang Lian. I believe it is also

present to some degree in goldenrod and goldenseal. Interestingly,

some huang lian su tablets are made with berberine Hcl instead of

huang lian itself, although I have only seen them in Thailand. The

packaging is identical to the normal yellow and green box that huang

lian su pian is often sold in, but if you look closely it actually

states that they are 50mg tabs of berberine Hcl.
