To get an idea of what a live online class would be like, professional members

can check

out the herbal broadcasting station, which is now broadcasting a Heiner Fruehauf

lecture

from the 2004 CHA conference.

The address is http://health.herbcast/

Tomorrow, Sunday, I will broadcast the Misha Cohen Lecture, part 1. This is

because

Misha's format is very conducive to the online environment due to her well laid

out

powerpoint presentations (Bob Damone's presentation also utilizes this format).

Powerpoint can be saved online as PDFs in full color and then downloaded from an

online

classroom the same way you would download any file from the CHA forum webpage.

While the program currently playing is taped, it could just as easily be

delivered live. The

video feed is currently live from San Diego, BTW. Under normal circumstances, a

live class

would include audio and video feed of the speaker. For technical reasons, I

cannot offer

that right now (I have no way to patch the conference DVD's thru my computer,

but I can

input the audio portion).

The complete online experience would involve the following:

1. Listeners or students download and open the lecture PDF to follow along what

the live

students are seeing projected on a screen (typically a powerpoint). This should

be opened

in a window large enough to read one full slide comfortably.

2. A smaller window should be opened containing the broadcast page where you

access

the video and audio. There is not much to see in the video as it just a

lecturer, so I have

made the window small for best sound quality. While the class could be

delivered much

cheaper with sound only, I felt it gave a more natural dimension to have a

visual

connection to the speaker.

3. Finally, students can open a forum window to post questions to the speaker.

The

herbcast page has its own forum for discussion of the programming. Messages

sent to

that forum (or a private classroom forum) could be relayed to a live speaker at

regular

intervals who could then direct verbal responses in real time back to the

cyberstudent.

This verbal response is a significant improvement over the old written response

format of

previous online CHA classes, which resulted in far too much demand on the

instructors to

make it viable.

This format will allow one to see and hear a live lecture, view the same course

materials as

the live audience and interact with the professor in real time.

As a further option, cyberstudents with cellphones could conceivably call in

live questions

that would be projected through an amplified speakerphone. This would allow

immediate

2 way verbal communication that could be heard by all participants cyber and

live.

However this option would have to be reserved for small specialized classes as

the the

costs of handling a large volume of calls would make this prohibitive and likely

interfere

with the presentation. A moderated message forum allows some control over the

flow of

questions, many of which will likely be redundant the larger the audience.

For those who try, let me know what you think. You will need a high speed

connection

and adobe acrobat.
