We saw Dr. Zhang this evening Jan 20, 2005. Following five consecutive

restless nights, getting no more than 3-4 hours in total each night, Wed.

2:00am Chana had a seizure after 20 days. Two more followed Thursday am,

one during sleep, and one at 10:00am. Yet none of the three seizure were

grande mal. All three relatively mild. This whole week she has been

very irrititable and high strung. She still has a lot of thick bronchial

phlegm causing her to cough when she lies down and further interfering

with sleep. Yet despite her irritability, the polyuria has not returned.

Muscle spasms this week responded very well to tuina, CST and massage,

however, within 1/2 hour they would return. Bowel movements daily, well

formed and soft. Cheeks are now red. Finally received Email from Chris

Cruzio of Parkinson's recovery project. He felt that Chana's condition

is not ideopathic PD (He's right it's not!) but rather parkinsonism. I

appealed to them to consider the unusual " bio-electrical " nature of her

disorder, and how, from what I had read, applying their ideas, and

thinking " outside the box " their approach could be a major link helping

her get well. As of yet, no response.

Anyway, tonight her tongue was dry with a red tip, little coating, and

cracks

her pulses: left -wiry, right -thready, third position weak.

Last week the strategy was to transform phlegm, and Dr. Zhang felt that

that is why the seizures were relatively minor--less phlegm=less severe

seizures. Now she's showing more yin deficient heat. Therefore the

treatment principle is nourish yin and subdue fire.

Here is this week's formula: Sheng di huang 24, Bai shao yao 15, xi yang

shen 6, mu dan pi 9, di gu pi 9, mai men dong 12, tian men dong 12,

huang qin 9, huang lian3, e jiao 9, gui ban 15, bie jia 15, zhen zhu mu

15, ye jiao teng 15, suan zao ren 15, dan nan xing 9

taken separately in capsule form: quan xie and wu gong 3 each, da huang

3, and hu po 3(at bedtime only).

Last week:

We saw Dr. Zhang this evening, Jan 13, 2005. Her last seizure

was Dec 29. (We still haven't heard back from Janice Walton-Hadlock

concerning the Parkinson's recovery project in Santa Cruz, though I

continue to read with great interest the Practitioner's Handbook). Last

week's formula significantly tonified yin, as there was a dramatic

increase in volume, number and moisture of bowel movements. Also sleep

was better this week. However, no change in muscle spasms with tongue

and chin constantly moving, still very weak, still difficulty

comprehending and concentrating, very irritable to the touch. Though

sleep was better, woke up at 5:00 AM each morning, and unable to fall

back asleep. Caught a chest cold, with a lot of bronchial phlegm.

tongue: normal body color, thin white coat, red tip, slight teethmarks.

Pulse left: wiry, right: thready and choppy. Dr Zhang pointed out that

there are two important considerations now: tonify qi and transform

phlegm. The signs of qi xu are: waking early, weak, difficult to

concentrate, teethmarks, and deficient pulse. As far as the phlegm is

concerned, as I mentioned last week, phlegm is engendered by damp

accumulation which accompanies spleen xu, and as we are now within a week

of when a seizure would be expected, especially in light of the lung

phlegm already presenting, reducing herbs are indicated. Also, note that

the daily dose of Da Huang is now reduced to 3 grams.

The formula prescribed is: sheng di huang 24, bai shao yao 15, gui ban

15, bie jia 15, gou teng 21, tian ma 9, huang qi 15, xi yang shen 6, fu

shen 9, bai zhu 9, dan nan xing 9, yuan zhi 6, zhu ru 9, jiang can 9,

di long 9.

taken separately in capsule form: quan xie and wu gong 3 each, da huang

3, and hu po 3(at bedtime).

Anyway, Chana's last seizure was Dec. 29. We saw Dr. Zhang on Jan 6. At

the time she had had a very difficult week. Sleep was very poor,

constant muscle spasms, very weak, increased nocturia, tongue and chin

constantly moving, difficulty comprehending, neck, chin and jaw very

sensitive to the touch. Her tongue had little coating, normal body

color, red tip and cracks. The pulses were wiry and choppy on both

wrists.

The formula prescribed was: Sheng di huang 30, xuan shen 15, mai men

dong 12, bai shao yao 15, gui ban 15, bie Jia 15, zhen zhu mu 15,

yu zhu 12, bai he 15, gou teng 15, sang piao xiao 12, di long 9, chan tui

9, suan zao ren 15, ye jiao teng 12, wu wei zi 9. Taken separately in

capsule form: quan xie 3 and wu gong 3, and da huang 3.5 grams daily.
