Guest guest
Hi All, Have any of you come across pedal irritation / laminitis in animals bedded on Black Walnut shavings? See below. Best regards, Phil ------- Forwarded message follows ------- Date sent: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 12:51:06 -0400 " Beverly McEwen " <BMcewen Black Walnut induced laminitis in horses A stable of about 50 horses was exposed to black walnut that was mixed with other shavings for about 2 days. Some have developed severe laminitis, all feet, others have edema of the distal limbs (fore and/or hind) and mild-moderate laminitis. A litigation suit is likely. -Is there anyone that can identify the toxic principle (is it juglone or a quinone) in shavings? -Are removal of the shavings and washing of the stalls sufficient to remove the toxin (are there any oils that might persist in the environment)? -Any updates on pathogenesis?
