Guest guest
To me, learning requires these things. Intelligence Perseverance Access to Data Guidance from experts We used to need brick and mortar colleges mainly for the latter two. The environment also helped motivate for perseverance. But that is only an issue for those who lack it. With the internet, the data and access to an expert community like CHA or TCM lists is no longer an impediment. So the main value of colleges was they had the libraries and the teachers and you couldn't interact with either unless you were on campus. That has all changed and thus the factors necessary for anyone to learn anything are now in place online. I think our profession would advance dramatically if much of the current classwork was take out of the classroom and out online. All subjects that require critical thinking are better taught online; the evidence is now overwhelming. Students need to meet for hands on classes and for grand rounds and not much more class time than that. Those on this list who went to PBL med schools like Doc Sperber know exactly what I am talking about. It MDs can be trained to do what they do w/ o lecture, I think its same to say we could do it too w/o any risk to public safety. Its not a risk. Its a gain. and if the tide doesn't turn, it is just a bad sign for the mom and pop TCM schools. PCOM has already moved in this direction ten years ago, but many teachers will never get onboard, so its not really flying fullmast. Medical schools are going to start teaching TCM and they will do it PBL. Time to grab the bull by the horns or watch our status drop to the level of PTs over the next two decades. Guest guest
Ed, I only practice and teach Chinese herbology, combined with misc. topics like environmental health issues, nutrition, etc. Many of the MDs who are attracted to my course have already taken some form of acupuncture training, after which they begin to understand that Chinese herbology is important.
