New jaw problem

Alon and Group,

Do you have any suggestions for examination or treatment of a patient who has a

hearing blockage (not hearing loss, because it comes and goes) due, it seems, to

muscular tension in the neck or jaw? He thought he had an ear infection or

impacted wax, but neither is the case. He is very tense, always has a stiff and

sore neck and may clench his jaws a lot. One acupuncture treatment helped a lot

(using points in the jaw and GB channel) but then the problem came back. He

can't hear out of the ear on the side where he has the most muscular tension.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Julie-

refer him to a top notch CranioSacral practitioner. I know someone terrific

in the Southbay if you're interested and that area is close to the patient.

(I remember that you were at Yo San). CST is able to gently move the

cranial bones to make permanent changes, including, when appropriate, work

inside the mouth, right up your patient's alley to resolve this problem.

The tympanic membrane shares some invervation with cervical accessory nerve and

can be affected by cranial function. However, cranial sacral work may not be were

one needs to start treatment depending on if it is the greatest area of

restriction. I would first approach it like any other cervical spine problem.

Hearing impairment has also been reported with SCM trigger points.
