Guest guest
A woman about to undergo sperm donor and in vitro procedure has contacted me. Previous acupuncturist said she'd offer support up to this procedure but not afterwards. The other acupuncturist (from another city) hasn't called me back yet, but I wonder about possible liability issues. Understandably, the procedure will cost her a lot of money and a lot is at stake. I haven't seen her yet, so I don't know about her individual risk factors and strengths. What are your thoughts, experiences? Frances Gander, R.Ac. Guest guest
Frances, IVF has no guarantees either and the medical profession does not make individual promises. Just be yourself and share your insight as to how you see things and let the chips fall where they may. What liability issue are you worried about? Mike W. Guest guest
Frances - Who is your malpractice carrier? Both Eastern Risk Specialties and AAC now offer riders (at an additional cost) for the treatment of OB patients. If you are seeing a lot of women dealing with fertility/OB issues, it is probably advisable to purchase or you will not be covered. Guest guest
MIke - While I would not hesitate to treat this patient after an IVF procedure - in fact I would encourage continued treatment, this issue lies in the fragility/vulnerability of the patient. It is worth havng malpractice/liability insurance to CYA shoudl there be a failure or an early miscarriage while undergoing acupuncture. The chances of a lawsuit are slim - and might not hold up in court - but the cost of defending yourself if you do not have the coverage is prohibitive. Guest guest
The issue seems to be if our current malpractice includes OB and GYN coverage. Some experts are telling us that is the case and so our current malpractice would not save us. The AAC has been working on expanded, specialized coverage for such. Mike W.
