Would experts double-check this & report to the lists? England reports Heishengma (Black Cohosh) causes liver damage. August 11th, 2005 The national food & drugs surveillance administrative bureau drugs appraisal center on August 2nd assessed Heishengma (Black Cohosh; Cimicifuga racemosa), traditionally used to treat rheumatism (Wind Damp Bi, Fengshibing), rheumatic arthritis (Wind Damp Pattern Arthritis, Fengshixing Guanjieyan), intercostal muscle pain, sciatica, chorea, tinnitus, dysmenorrhoea & menopausal syndrome. Adverse effects of Black Cohosh include ST-SI-SI irritation, headache, dizziness & nausea. There is concern that it causes abnormal LV function. Up to March 31st, 2005, the English drugs administrative bureau (MHRA) altogether received 20 examples of suspected LV damage from Black Cohosh. The report warns against high doses or longterm use of Black Cohosh, and warns patients to stop its use and consult a doctor if LV signs arise. Also, the report mentioned one report of LV failure (Levitsky J, Alli TA, Wisecarver J, Sorrell MF. Fulminant liver failure associated with the use of black cohosh. Dig Dis Sci 2005; 50 (3):538-9.).
