Dear Dody,

I have a almost two year old who drinks goat's milk. She started it so young,

taste was less

of an issue. It does have a strong taste, as compared with cow's or soy milks.

You can try

sweetening it with brown rice syrup until she gets used to the taste--that's

what the

make-your-own goat's milk formula websites seem to recommend. Or mixing it with

something more familiar to start, then gradually adding more goat and less of

the other

beverage.

I would also HIGHLY recommend getting fresh goat's milk, if you can find it. The

taste is

worlds better than the powdered stuff. The obvious drawbacks are portability and

price.

Not that this is an issue for a two year old, but FYI, there is commercially

available goat's

milk formula. It's called Nanny and it's available in the UK. I don't know where

you're

located, but I found websites that will ship it internationally. However it

becomes very

expensive with duty and shipping. I know there have been sporatic movements in

the US

to make goat's milk formula available in this country but (surprise!) the dairy

industry is a

big lobby too.

The only trouble with almond milk is children with peanut allergies may do best

to avoid

it. I'm not sure how young it can be started. (Anyone?) I know the peds tend to

disagree as

to what age nuts can be introduced into the diet. Moms I know have been told to

wait as

long as age two.

Dody (and others), since you brought it up, do you think toddlers need

multivitamins?

Asking here as a parent and a practioner. I tend to be on the fence on this

subject. I had a

bottle in my hand the other day, but put it back. It seemed not to have anything

she wasn't

already getting from her diet or other sources, like Vitamin C, Calcium,

magnesium,

Vitamin D.

Cheers,

Sarah Rivkin
