I suspected the reason was that most tinnitus was due to irreparable damage to the ear rather than liver yang rising or jing vacuity. In the most severe cases, I could always find a history of trauma. This article explains how many, many milder cases could also be caused by trauma, in this case from ipods and walkmen.
