The New York Times today reported that the chinese horseshoe bat is a

hiding place or reservoir species for the SARS virus. The bats are healthy

carriers. The article mentions that " In Asia, many people eat bats or use

bat feces in traditional medicine for asthma, kidney ailments and general

malaise. " The finding is considered important because it provides an

opportunity " to break the transmission chain " between civet cats and raccon

dogs, which are not reservoir animalas, and humans. The news was also

reported yesterday in the online version of Science.
